It is not hard for me to pile on people like Mark Sanford, John Edwards, Elliot Spitzer, John Ensign, David Vitter, et al. I am married and I HAVE a conscience and a moral compass. What is most disturbing is the moral outrage displayed by some of these righties to demonize gay and lesbian marriage all the while ignoring the moral depravity of supporting or ignoring poverty, war, human rights, torture and the suspension of habeas corpus, corporate and legislative malfeasance, inadequate health care, global warming, energy independence, labor rights and protections etc, etc..  MC

Mark Sanford:

"In dissent with the Republican Party of South Carolina, Sanford, whose faith is Episcopal, opposes the faith-based license plates his state offers, marketed largely to the state's conservative evangelical citizens. After allowing the law to pass without his signature, he wrote, "It is my personal view that the largest proclamation of one's faith ought to be in how one lives his life."[16]

John Ensign

In 1998, after President Bill Clinton admitted to having committed adultery with Monica Lewinsky, Ensign called on him to resign, saying, "He has no credibility left."[20]

In 2004, Ensign spoke on the Senate floor in favor of the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have barred states from recognizing same-sex marriage. Ensign said:

Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation.[21]

David Vitter:

In 2003, Vitter proposed to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.[188] In 2004, he said, "This is a real outrage. The Hollywood left is redefining the most basic institution in human history...We need a U.S. Senator who will stand up for Louisiana values, not Massachusetts’s values."[189] In June 2006, he said "I don't believe there's any issue that's more important than this one ... I think this debate is very healthy, and it's winning a lot of hearts and minds. I think we're going to show real progress."[190] In 2006, he told The Times-Picayune, “I’m a conservative who opposes radically redefining marriage, the most important social institution in human history.”[27]

In October 2005, at a Lafayette Parish Republican Executive Committee luncheon, Vitter compared gay marriage to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which came through the same geographical areas. Vitter said "It's the crossroads where Katrina meets Rita. I always knew I was against same-sex unions."[191]
